What Happens During Routine Dental Visits?

We provide these services for our patients during regular dental appointments:

Digital X-rays

We will also take X-rays to find dental problems that we cannot see during a visual examination. For example, cavities and bone loss due to gum disease appear as darker areas because of more X-ray penetration.

While we will not take X-rays at every visit, we will take them as needed. This schedule depends on your age, risk for disease, and current signs and symptoms.

Recent films may be needed to detect new cavities, determine the status of gum disease, or evaluate new growth and development.

Dental Cleanings

During routine dental cleanings, our hygienists use stainless steel dental tools to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums. Plaque is a bacterial film that builds on the teeth and gums.

Over time, plaque can turn into tartar. Tartar, also known as calculus, is hardened plaque that can appear as brown or yellow deposits between teeth.

After removing bacteria from the smile, our hygienists brush the teeth and gums with toothpaste, floss between teeth, and rinse the mouth.

Examination

After a dental cleaning, Dr. Jenicke will examine the teeth, gums, and soft palette. She will also review x-rays and recommend dental work as needed.

You can also ask her any questions about recommended treatment; Dr. Jenicke is always happy to help patients learn about their dental health.
